The Art Of Monteque set down with the filmmakers and creators of “Honey Buddies”, director and screenwriter Alex Simmons. Along with screenwriters David Giuntoli and Flula Borg . Honey Buddies had its United States World Premiere at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival. “Honey Buddies” is about a jilted groom David is convinced by his excitable best man Flula to continue with his planned honeymoon, a backcountry trek in the mountains of Oregon, in a highly comedic ode to friendship and the great outdoors.

TAOM: How did you guys meet and decide to make this movie?

David Giuntoli (Writer/Producer/Actor): Well, Alex, Flula and I live within 3 miles of each other. It was inevitable that we’d make a movie together. We wanted to make an indie film, work with a small crew, and tell a good story.

Alex Simmons (Director): It all made sense for me. Although I would have like to have more time to shoot, we only had 10 days. I would loved 20! But shooting HB with 2 cameras and in a documentary style allowed my vision to come to life and I’m happy with the result.

TAOM: What did you enjoy most about the process of making this film?

Flula Borg (Actor): I loved the freedom. Even though I wish we had more time, it was a fun and incredible experience. It was like sniffs of milkshakes!

TAOM: What challenged do you think indie film makers have when they transition into big budget movies?

Alex: Well, I think the machine takes out the creative process. We had to rely on each other and wear many hats, which was both exhausting and rewarding. We hiked 5 miles to get the shots, which was well worth it. Maybe with a bigger budget, we wouldn’t have experienced that close nit family feel of an indie film, which I wanted to preserve.

TAOM: What was the Post Production process like?

Alex: After reading an article by Judd Apatow and Paul Feig, I decided to re-edit the entire movie. I followed their advise and found the Best jokes or moments and built whole scenes around those moments. It took the air out of the scene and worked for me.

David: Most of the time, the whole story can be written in the editing room.

TAOM: So what’s next for you guys?

Alex, David, Flula: A TV series about the middle years in LA of the three of us. Basically, our stories in a comedic tone. We’d also love to make another movie together at some point.

AOM: What is your goal for “Honey Buddies”?

Alex, David, Flula: We’d love for it to be seen by as many passionate fans as possible.

Alex: Life is too short to NOT work with people you like. We all enjoyed watching it! [TAOM]
